The Reason Why Is Simple. "Giving"

I'll never forget the time back in my younger life at a day camp. I was leading the pack on a typical treasure hunt, through the fields and woods, over the walls and rocks.

When I came across the second to last clue of our treasure hunt, I knew I was well ahead of the throng behind me, and that I had a great chance of winning the treasure at that moment.

But I stopped and gave thought to the experience, the action, the activity of playing, motivated by a sense of excitement coupled with the chance of glory.

And it could be soon over. For me and the rest of the kids there too. So, I made a decision at that moment that has paid me dividends my entire life since then.

Instead of moving on towards the end, I turned back to the searching crowd and yelled, "Hey the clue is right over here!"

What I then experienced at that moment was the best reward or "'treasure'' I could have ever imagined. I gave each one of those kids a chance to win the prize.

You should have seen the joy that overcame their wide eyed faces, brimming with eager smiles and excitement that moment I shared my discovery with them as they raced toward me with this new found chance to win...and I realized that I had made it happen.

I was elated.

It was priceless lesson.

I gave to them, but they gave back to me much, much more in return. As I glad fully stepped aside with the fulfilling and satisfying knowledge that I had just found, I then realized the very best treasure that hunt had to offer anyone that day. The ability to make people happy, and at no expense to oneself.

I had no prior experience of the impact being able to make so many people happy in the process. Make one person happy is truly great. But making many people happy is exponentially that much better.

I still treasure that memory to this day and it makes me smile every time I recall it.

You know, I couldn't for the life of me tell you what the "official treasure" was that day. I had just found mine.
